Description

Tannic acid is a kind of polyphenol having numerous phenol groups. As the phenols are considered weak acids thus, tannic acid is a weak acid. Acidum tannicum or Gallotanic acid are two other names of tannic acid. Condensed tannins and hydrolyzable tannins are the two primary varieties of Acidum tannicum.

Pharmacology. Tannic acid is indicated for cold sores, fever blisters, diaper rash, minor burn or sunburn and prickly heat. Vaginally, tannic acid is used as a douche for leukorrhea. It has been also indicated for sore throat, inflamed tonsils, spongy or receding gums, and acute dermatitis.
