Applications

Methylene chloride is predominantly used as a solvent in paint strippers and removers; as a process solvent in the manufacture of drugs, pharmaceuticals, and film coatings; as a metal cleaning and finishing solvent in electronics manufacturing; and as an agent in urethane foam blowing.

Description

MDC is an organochloride compound with the formula CH₂Cl₂. This colorless, volatile liquid with a moderately sweet aroma is widely used as a solvent. Although it is not miscible with water, it is polar, and miscible with many organic solvents.

Preparation

Production Process : When methyl chloride or methane is treated with chlorine gas at 400–500 °C, methylene dichloride is produced. Apart from DCM, this process also leads to the production of methyl chloride, chloroform and carbon tetrachloride, separated by distillation.

Chemical Properties

The majority of Methylene dichloride in the environment is due to industrial emissions. The chemical formula of Dichloromethane is CH2Cl2. Methylene chloride is a colourless liquid which has a sweet, penetrating, ether-like smell. It is a volatile liquid chlorinated hydrocarbon.

Definition

Methylene Di Chloride also known as Di Chloro Methane. This colorless, volatile liquid with a chloroform-like, sweet odor is widely used as a solvent. Although it is not miscible with water, it is polar and miscible with many organic solvents.
