Applications
Being bifunctional (having two formyl groups), isophthalaldehyde allows the formation of polymers or covalent organic frameworks upon reaction with di- or triamines. They also find use in metal coordination complexes.
Description
Isophthalaldehyde is an organic compound with the formula C6H4(CHO)2. It is one of three isomers of benzene dicarbaldehyde, a reduced analog of phthalic acid. It is a colorless solid, although commercial samples often appear yellowish. One preparation entails the Sommelet reaction of α,α’-diamino-ortho-xylene.
Preparation
Isophthalaldehyde has been prepared from m-xylene by preparation of the tetrachloro derivative and hydrolysis,3 from isophthaloyl chloride by the Rosenmund reaction,4 from α,α’-dibromo-m-xylene by the Sommelet reaction,5 and from isophthaloyl chloride by reduction with lithium tri-t-butoxyaluminumhydride.
Chemical Properties
Iso-phthalaldehyde is a chemical compound known for its aromatic structure and reactivity as a cross-linking agent and disinfectant in water treatment and medical applications.
Definition
Iso-phthalaldehyde is an organic compound with a chemical structure related to phthalaldehyde, often used as a disinfectant and biocide due to its antimicrobial properties.
