Applications
Hydrogen peroxide is a mild antiseptic used on the skin to prevent infection of minor cuts, scrapes, and burns. It may also be used as a mouth rinse to help remove mucus or to relieve minor mouth irritation (such as due to canker/cold sores, gingivitis).
Description
Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a chemical compound consisting of two hydrogen atoms and two oxygen atoms, commonly used as a disinfectant and bleach due to its powerful oxidative properties.
Preparation
Sodium peroxide is gradually added to an ice-cold solution of 20% H2SO4. Upon cooling, crystals of Na2SO4. 10H2O separates out and the resulting solution contains 30% H2O2.
Chemical Properties
It is soluble in water, alcohol, and ether. Hydrogen peroxide is viscous and denser than water (1.44g/cm3) because H2O2 molecules have stronger H-bonds than H2O molecules, this occurs. Its boiling point is 150 degrees Celsius, while its freezing point is 0.89 degrees Celsius.
Definition
Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is colorless liquid with a similar chemical formula to water (H2O). The extra oxygen molecule — from which hydrogen peroxide gets its name, as it features one hydrogen per oxygen — represents the main difference between the formulas.
