Gamma-Cyclodextrin

Applications
γ-Cyclodextrin bound to silica gel, in HPLC mode, is mostly used for enantiomer separations. However, in the field of fullerenes, it has been used for separating C60 from C70. γ-Cyclodextrin is a cyclic oligosaccharide that forms complexes with fullerenes.
Description
Gamma-cyclodextrin (gamma-CD) is a cyclic alpha-(1,4)-linked oligosaccharide consisting of eight glucose molecules. Like other cyclodextrins, gamma-CD can form inclusion complexes with a variety of organic molecules because the inner side of the torus-like molecule is less polar than the outer side.
Preparation
At present, γ-CD is mainly obtained by the action of cyclodextrin glucosyltransferase (CGTase, EC 2.4. 1.19) on starch. Starches from different sources, such as cassava, corn, and potato are the main substrates for production of γ-CD (Pishtiyski & Zhekova, 2006).
Chemical Properties
Gamma-cyclodextrin exhibits chemical properties such as its ability to encapsulate hydrophobic molecules, increase their solubility, and form inclusion complexes, making it useful in various applications, including pharmaceuticals and food industries.
Definition
Gamma-cyclodextrin is a cyclic oligosaccharide composed of glucose units, with a truncated cone-shaped structure, often used to encapsulate and improve the solubility of hydrophobic molecules in various applications.
