Applications
Cobalt(II) sulfate is used in storage batteries and electroplating baths, sympathetic inks, and as an additive to soils and animal feeds. For these purposes, the cobalt sulfate is produced by treating cobalt oxide with sulfuric acid.
Description
Cobalt Sulfate is an odorless, rose-pink, toxic, crystalline, metallic salt. It is used in the electrochemical industries, as a drier in paints and inks, and in storage batteries as well as in the manufacture of other commercial and consumer products.
Preparation
Cobalt (II) Sulfate can be prepared by the action of aqueous sulfuric acid on cobaltous oxide. It can also be prepared by the interaction of metallic cobalt, its hydroxide, or carbonate with aqueous sulfuric acid. The heptahydrate transforms into hexahydrate if the humidity is below 70% at room temperature.
Chemical Properties
Cobalt sulfate (CoSO4) exhibits solubility in water, forms various hydrates, and is utilized as a catalyst, often imparting a pink to red color to its solutions.
Definition
Cobalt sulfate is a chemical compound with the formula CoSO4, consisting of cobalt, sulfur, and oxygen, commonly used in various industrial and chemical applications.
