Cerium(IV) sulfate is a chemical compound used in many industries, including:
- Catalysts: Cerium(IV) sulfate can catalyze the selective oxidation of secondary alcohols to ketones. It can also catalyze the direct sulfonation of methane to methanesulfonic acid.
- Oxidizing agent: Cerium(IV) sulfate is often used as an oxidizing agent in titrimetric methods. The orange color of cerium(IV) ion is reduced to the colorless cerium(III) ion.
- Redox indicator: Cerium(IV) sulfate is used in analytical chemistry for redox titrations. It is often used together with a redox indicator.
- Cerium salt raw material: Cerium(IV) sulfate hydrate powder is used as a cerium salt raw material.
- Cemented carbide additive: Cerium(IV) sulfate hydrate powder is used as a cemented carbide additive.
- Chemical reagents: Cerium(IV) sulfate hydrate powder is used as a chemical reagent.
Description
Cerium(IV) sulfate, also called ceric sulfate, is an inorganic compound. It exists as the anhydrous salt Ce(SO₄)₂ as well as a few hydrated forms: Ce(SO₄)₂ₓ, with x equal to 4, 8, or 12. These salts are yellow to yellow/orange solids that are moderately soluble in water and dilute acids.
The CAS number for cerium(IV) sulfate is 13590-82-4. It’s also known as ceric sulfate and cerium disulfate
