Description
Boric Acid is a monobasic Lewis acid with the chemical formula H3BO3. It is an acid-containing compounds of boron, oxygen, and hydrogen. Boric acid is also known as acidum boricum, hydrogen borate, boracic acid, and orthoboric acid. It is a weak acid and has antiviral, antifungal, and antiseptic properties.
Preparation
Boric acid may be prepared by reacting borax (sodium tetraborate decahydrate) with a mineral acid, such as hydrochloric acid: Na 2B 4O 7·10 H 2O + 2 HCl → 4 B(OH) 3 + 2 NaCl + 5 H 2O. It is also formed as a by product of hydrolysis of boron trihalides and diborane: B 2H 6 + 6 H 2O → 2 B(OH) 3 + 6 H.
