Applications

Iodine is also used to make polarising filters for LCD displays. Iodide is added in small amounts to table salt, in order to avoid iodine deficiency affecting the thyroid gland. The radioactive isotope iodine-131 is sometimes used to treat cancerous thyroid glands.

Description

Iodine is a non-metallic, dark-gray/purple-black, lustrous, solid element. Iodine is the most electropositive halogen and the least reactive of the halogens even if it can still form compounds with many elements. Iodine sublime easily on heating to give a purple vapour.

Preparation

Iodine 0.1 N: Weigh 40 g of potassium iodide (KI) in a 500 mL glass-stoppered flask and dissolve in 100 mL of purified water. Let the solution come to room temperature, add 12.7 g of resublimed iodine (I2), restopper the flask, and swirl the flask until the iodine is completely dissolved.
